“the idea that the capacity to give birth (biology) is what defines a woman” (1907).

The brain is the mind. Nothing happens in the mind that does not have its correlate and origin in neurological activity. ... Literary scholars can use information from the biological and social sciences, but they also need to take the initiative in doing empirical research on problems that are particulartly relevant to literary understanding. ... empirically oriented literary scholars can and should produce empirical knowledge that is valuable also to the social sciences. Postcolonialism of Colonialist, and Lawrence Buell 읽은 것들2014. 11. 18. 08:30

Buell often tries to examine the postcolonial stance of the United States, the country almost always has been existing as a colonist; what would be an implication through this kind of attempts? To put oneself in a politically victimized stance is one of the most convenient positions in our postmodern days; it would be interesting to analyze the coexistence of postcolonial and colonial stance in a country, the United States as well as Korea.

"since the eighteenth century, the author has played the role of the regulator of the fictive" (159).

On Chandler's "Red Wind"

In “Notes on Raymond Chandler’s ‘Red Wind’” (ESTSF 9, i: 166–72), Marc Seals points out some of the features that make “Red Wind” a good story to study and teach: plot devices such as a necklace, pearls, and blackmail; the manipulation of “cultural stereotype to alternately fulfill and thwart” what the audience expects; the protagonist’s interest in the game of chess; the weather motif; and the use of guns to provide “Freudian phallic imagery.”
